Beauty and the Beast- the Pantomime
The beloved, romantic story of a village girl and a bewitched prince, in a Tale as Old as Time... Oh, and a cross-dressing Ma and a giant French Poodle called Felix (every panto should have one)! And a nasty baddie! Every panto has to have one. (Well, spoiler,
the beast isn't bad really, is he!) Join the gang for French fun and frolics (for as long as the accents hold up) as Rose and brother Jacques hopelessly try to train Felix - who has some curiously human traits - and meet uber-strong blacksmith Capucine. After uber-mean witch Malabelle takes being spurned by the uber-handsome Prince (you wait for ages then 3 Ubers come together!) out on the local village, the story takes Ma and then Rose through the dark forest to a remote castle full of furniture - also with some notably human traits - as prisoner of a shouty, but rather sad Beast! Can Rose see beyond the monster to save her captor? Can Ma carry off pretending to be a man(!)? Can Jacques ever overcome Felix's Poodle Power and train him to ignore a tree? All these vital questions will be answered in a fast-paced, fun-filled show with
a cast of... lots, 3 (yes 3!) weddings, and fantastic song favourites to singalong with: 500 Miles, Let It Go, Dancing in the Street, Careless Whisper (complete with live sax!) and lots more. Come along! You know you want to... oh yes you do!" It's just the best start to the festive period you could wish upon a star for!

wow!!!
Wow!! What a show. Four stonking performances to packed and we mean packed houses. Everyone and everything just clicked like a win on the lottery. Brilliant cast. Brilliant singing. Brilliant costumes. Brilliant band and brilliant direction. I think it's fair to say the whole thing was brilliant. Thoroughly enjoyed by all.

With a final cheer from another fantastic audience, BIPs 2022 Beauty & the Beast panto - the first in three years with the closures forced by the pandemic - came to a joyful close. In the year since theatres reopened, BIPs has managed a full set of productions, but, membership and funds were low, and confidence visiting theatres was low too. BIPs also did two of their three shows to raise funds for community activities and the third a successful One Act Play Festival entry, again did not generate income.
The panto had many goals to achieve.
Over the three 2021-22 shows, we happily attracted a few new people to get involved each time, on and, vitally, off stage.
Starting work on the panto in June, the main aim was to bring together all those who had come to BIPs in different shows since covid devastated the group, into one fun experience. In the process it brought even more.
A panto always generates most income for an amateur group, but it's also, as often the largest scale show, most costly. So, while it was hoped it might help bring in some net income, moreso it was hoped it would raise and re-establish the club's profile in the community.
It was also aimed at reaching out to the community to join in: BIPs received amazing donations, sponsorship and raffle prizes, and the newly set up Dunkeld Men's Shed gave time and energy to build the set.
It was hoped to provide a creative outlet in a number of forms, not only for local actors, experienced and new, but musicians, scenic artists, stage crew, lighting and sound support - both expert and budding.
BIPs wanted to bring people of all ages together (and out of the house after two years of getting too used to being indoors) of all ages: and, from 7 members remaining in the AGM of 2021, there were well over 30 people involved in this panto: of all generations, long-term and previous BIPs members, recently involved and brand new.
BIPs wanted to support the wonderful Birnam Arts who have also been hit so hard by the pandemic and have been so supportive as BIPs has worked to regain its feet.
The financial outcome is yet to be finally calculated, but a hardworking team brought dedication and laughter to three months of rehearsals following three months of planning work before even getting together to form the show.
Over everything, BIPs wanted to bring colours, singing, dancing, fun and silliness, and a magical start to the festive season with lots of audience participation to Birnam and Dunkeld, for as many as possible, for as little as possible.
Three sell-out shows, and some of the loudest audiences, singing and shouting, let alone cheering and applauding - and on top of that a cast and crew happy, confident and proud of their show, gives BIPs the best belief that Beauty and The Beast, Birnam and Dunkeld's Community panto, really was a roaring success serving the community in the many goals it was hoped it might achieve."
